My memory must not be what it used to be. When I was a child the movies were full of
brave Americans soldiers fighting Germans in Normandy
and documentaries showed how Britain
stood alone against the Germans. Today
we know better as they were not Germans but Nazis.
Not only that but these Nazis were from Poland.
Well that is what you read in the Promise (see
American
Thinker 3rd May 2010)
with
its Nazi Poland. There never was and I
hope never will be a Nazi Poland. There
was a Nazi German occupied Poland
in which Polish citizens of both the Jewish and Christian faith
suffered and
died in the millions. There has been a
slow shift in who is to blame for these crimes.
Today it seems Poland
must take the blame when in the past Germany
was rightly held at fault.
Some may see this as mere semantic but as David A.
Harris
the American Jewish Committee Executive Director has said Historical
integrity and accuracy hang in the balance. Any
misrepresentation of Poland's role in the Second World War, whether
intentional or accidental, would be most regrettable and therefore
should not
be left unchallenged.
This could seem as am unimportant issue however
where will
it end? Today you want to talk incorrectly
about the camps just because they were placed in occupied Poland
by the Germans but next you will be referring to the guards as
"Polish" just because the guards were in occupied Poland. You claim Poland
was Nazi now and before you know it; we will read about the "Polish"
army attacking Warsaw in
1939. We have already seen journalists
choosing to
call camps in Germany
and Austria
"Polish" just because people wrongly associate the Holocaust with Poland
rather than those who actually were responsible, the Germans.
The Polish record may not be perfect but Poland
was the first country to stand up to Hitler.
Poland
was the only country to have an organisation to aid Jews.
Poland
was the only country to unconditional support the bombing of the death
camps. Poland
has more Righteous (i.e. those who aided Jews) than any other. Poland
was the only country that the Nazi Germans found it necessary to
introduce the
mandatory death penalty for aiding Jews.
Poland
was one of the largest allied forces and resistance forces.
As the World Jewish Congress put it, Poland
should not be blamed for the Holocaust, to
blame here are the Nazis and their allies.
Just as it is wrong to call the death camps
“Polish,” it is
equally wrong to call Poland Nazi
